All appliances should be thoroughly cleaned and dry before storing. Refrigerators and freezers will need to be defrosted properly, cleaned and dry, then stored with door slightly ajar.
Pack books flat to protect their spines. Use packaging material to fill out empty pockets in boxes. Do not pack fragile items in the same box as books and do not overload the box.
Place a plastic sheet on the floor for protection and stand sofas and mattresses on end. Disassemble beds and tables and remove mirrors that are attached to dressers. If a table cannot be disassembled, place padding on the floor for protection, lay the table on its top with its legs pointing up. Place protective sheets on top of dressers to protect surface and allow for boxes and other items to be stacked on top. It is a good idea to place a lightweight dust cover on your furniture.
Place a thick layer of packing material along the bottom and at the top of boxes containing glassware. All glass items should be individually wrapped in protective wrapping. Once boxed, use packaging materials to fill out empty pockets in boxes. Remember to mark FRAGILE on box.
For the best protection of mirrors and other large framed items, wrap them in a protective covering such as bubble wrap, and stack them on their sides. Separate lamps shades from lamp bases and wrap them for protection. ALL fragile items should be wrapped in a protective covering, packed tightly in a sturdy box. Remember to mark FRAGILE on the box.
All electronics such as televisions, stereos, computers, etc. should be packed in boxes that are about the same size as the equipment itself. Any empty pockets should be filled with packing materials. Any cords, wires, etc. should be neatly wrapped up and packed in the same box as the item they are relevant to.
